Introduction: Kidney stones are the accumulation of mineral and chemical deposits in the sinus of the kidneys. The occurrence of kidney stones depends on various factors, including diet, weather conditions, body mass index, age, and race. This study was conducted to evaluate the prevalence of kidney stones in people referring to Alemi Hospital during the first half of 1402.
Materials and Methods: This study was conducted in a descriptive-cross-sectional and retrospective manner on the files of individuals. Relevant information including their number, age, gender, and place of residence was collected from the existing files and analyzed.
Results: The results showed that the prevalence of kidney stones in people referring to Alemi Hospital was 41.9%. This disorder was observed more in men than women, and the male-female ratio was about 1:1.86. The average age of the patients was 40 years, and most cases were recorded in the age group of 40 to 50 years. A direct relationship was also identified between the degree of water hardness and the prevalence of kidney stones.
Conclusion: The results of this study show that kidney stones are a relatively common disorder among people referring to this center, especially in men and middle-aged people. Factors such as water hardness and climatic conditions were identified as important factors in the occurrence of this disorder. It is suggested that awareness programs about appropriate water consumption, diet regulation, and prevention of risk factors be implemented, especially in areas with hard water.
